5 Tips for Newborn Photography

Newborn photography

Safety First: The safety of the newborn is the most important aspect of newborn photography. At Danielle Nicole Portraits, I always make sure the baby is safe and comfortable during the shoot. I don't attempt any poses that could put the baby in danger, such as hanging or dangling poses. Also, I ensure the temperature of the room is warm enough to keep the baby cozy.

  1. Timing is Key: The best time to photograph newborns is within the first two weeks of their life. During this time, babies tend to sleep more soundly and are easier to pose. Try to schedule the shoot during the baby's naptime, as they'll be more likely to sleep through the session.

  2. Create a Calming Environment: A calm and relaxing environment will help keep the baby comfortable and happy. Use soft lighting, white noise, and keep the room quiet to create a serene atmosphere.

  3. Use Simple Props and Poses: I keep the props and poses simple to avoid overwhelming the baby. I use soft, comfortable blankets and minimal props to avoid any distractions and help us focus on the baby, and the families connection to their new little one. Also, I keep the poses natural and relaxed, such as the baby sleeping on their back or in a curled-up position, or swaddled comfortably.

  4. Capture the Details: Newborns grow quickly, so it's important to capture all the tiny details before they change. I take close-up shots of their hands, feet, and face, as well as shots of them swaddled in blankets. Don't forget to be prepared to be in some photos as well. I take photos of the parents holding the baby, as well as any other siblings as long as they can cooperate, as these are often the most treasured shots.
